Did they have responsibilities? There was never any kind of work for people like us. It was very hard to find a job in the mid-’80s.
How did you first try to get into music, and what did you have to prove, in the music industry?
I’ve been a music nerd since the age of 13. I really enjoyed my older brother’s music, his bands like The Verve and Kero Kero Bonito. I was pretty into the Beatles as well. That’s what I played all the time as a kid. When I was older, I discovered that it helped a lot to be a fan. It’s a good feeling. All the people around you really like stuff. I always liked to watch movies and TV as a kid.
I was playing in a band in the mid-’80s and we had a fanclub at our school and we’d call people at our school and say, “Hello, and welcome to our fanclub. We’re in the B-side of this new band called the Flappers.”
My friend who had this band, he said, “Oh, you don’t do that. You just call and say, ‘Hi, we’re this band you’re gonna love.'” There was no need for that, because I had my audience already. In the middle of the ’80s people’s enthusiasm became very high and everybody wanted to hear something new. Then the Flappers formed and it was like a revolution. It was like there was no way to stop growing.

I liked singing. I didn’t understand it. I’d never learned how to listen or how to do it. There were a lot of older singers but I didn’t think I was any good. I was a little naive about it, too.
During my teenage years I’d sing at my friends’ weddings. They didn’t like it, so I started to sing at my own weddings. They just liked it. Then I got into my own bands and I started doing songs at my own weddings. I’d sing a song and they’d do something.
I sang a lot of love songs. When I
