Bobby Dandridge’s first year in Dallas was spent in the front seat of his friend’s car.
“I came down on one day he was driving us home on a hot afternoon,” recalled Dandridge. “He got out for the last 10 minutes of the day on the street, and he ran, and then he was gone.”
That was the end of Dennis Dandridge as the oldest son of Dandridge’s family; it was only weeks before the death of his father, Dwayne.
Dennis was 11, the youngest of four siblings. He started kindergarten in 2002 and by the time he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2004 — the year a tornado ravaged the college campus with tornadoes that killed five — he was ready for his education to begin.
“He was a pretty great kid,” said his brother Ryan, now a forward for Sacramento.com. “He loved hockey, and he loved everything about college. I told him, the reason you are in a lot of games at some point is because you want to play. I said if you don’t, it could get hard.”
Dandridge’s first game in Phoenix was against the Nets on Oct. 13, 2009, but with a few months to think about how he would fit in, he found himself standing at the edge of the court waiting for his name to be called.
He started for the Suns but missed the first two years thanks to injuries. The Jazz drafted him with the 36th overall pick, a pick he credits with giving him a chance at an NBA career.
For the first half of his career in Sacramento, Dandridge started at power forward, but he went from there to the bench as Sacramento struggled to create an identity and a sense of direction with three different head coaches.
When the Kings began their 2012-13 season, Dandridge was their point guard and their starting shooting guard. But when coach Michael Malone took over after the lockout, his new role meant moving him into the middle of the floor, where he was most effective.
Dandridge struggled early in the season, but was a key figure in Sacramento’s turnaround. After averaging 15.3 points and 5.3 assists in 22 games, he went a stretch of 27 games to build upon
