No, they did not…but they did wear pantyhose, or shorts, or skirts, or whatever. A lot of people don’t realize the degree to which women wore pantyhose in the 1920s and ’30s. There are a lot of books written about the underwear industry in the late 1920s and early 30s and they mention the waist-length “kilt,” and they use the words “pantyhose,” “panty tops,” and “panties.” And I think that’s actually a pretty accurate way of describing the “pantyhose industry” of the 1920s through the 1940s. You see, men did not buy all those panties that were sold…it seemed as though some were sold to girls, and some to boys. Many of the advertisers who were selling panties were well-known in their industry and the companies didn’t want those advertisers to be outed as being men. So there were some companies that had women working at them. The only female in charge was the “fellow” that made the panties….the lady in charge of making the panties made them into little little pieces. So men could keep a little bit of them for themselves that they might wear in the hot days of summer. The male-run industry was much bigger and they were selling out to men in general.
Have you seen a lot of “vintage” clothing advertising?
Most clothing advertisements of that period are from the ’30s through the ’40s, and most of those ads have a rather graphic quality. So the “fellow” in charge of making the underwear would have something to say about his product…so they would have “panty tops” and “pantyhose.” There were also a little known type of “panty-jams” where an older woman would put on a short dress, with no underwear…and a pant on top of that, so that her “fellow” could see her panties. And some advertisements would have “panty tops” of little girls—one of those ads I mentioned earlier, the woman was holding a little girl, holding a tiny diaper, as she puts on her pantyhose.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
There are so many different things that are going on now with the Internet that I’m happy to be out of this part. You really don’t need a lot of time to go through this material. I think it
