What happened to the Great Depression?
A: The 1930s were called the Roaring Twenties because they were the end of the Depression and the beginning of a new golden age.
B: And so the 1920s are just about the beginning of the new golden age.
You don’t have to be an engineer to figure out the Roaring Twenties are the beginning of the new golden age, and the 1920s are about the end of the Depression.
This is just a bunch of hooey, though. The 1920s were a time of mass immigration of people from all over the world. It’s one of that very few great periods of social and technological innovation in American history.
The 1920s is also about the birth of modern conservatism. It was a time when economic nationalism was on the rise. The great conservative economist, Thomas Sowell, even wrote a book called The Truly American Century. It is about the idea that America should be the world capital city. The Roaring Twenties were about an economic nationalist conservatism that called for a large influx of immigrants.
But you’re not likely to find Thomas Sowell as a Republican in the Roaring Twenties. He is an American citizen, and he wrote a book calling for an end to a large-scale immigration of people from the Third World.
It’s interesting there’s an interesting period called the Great Compression. It’s about when people in the United States were able to get ahead. By that I mean they were able to keep their jobs. They can stay in college. They can study abroad. There was nothing like this in the early 20th century and in the 1920s.
People were able to do these activities because of large-scale immigration with large-scale education programs. So that’s a good place to start reading Sowell.
The Roaring Twenties are about the end of the Depression and the beginning of a new golden age.
The 1920s were about the birth of modern conservatism. It was a time when economic nationalism was on the rise.
So the 1920s are about a new golden age. That’s where Sowell will put his foot down and say no to large-scale immigration of people from the Third World. That’s not conservatism, that’s something else entirely.
You have to look further down the slope and you have to dig around to find a movement or an ideology that wasn’t quite like this.
