When the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE) held what it deemed “The Transgender Week of Action” this past February 16-19 for more than 100 organizations that are actively fighting for equality, more than 100,000 people from across the country gathered at 50 sites around the country to hear from LGBT people, politicians and activists who have taken action in recent years to support transgender people.
For NCTE National President Mara Keisling, the work is not done.
“We’re just getting started,” Keisling said. “When trans folks are able to share their stories and get funding, that is transformational for our country.”
While Keisling noted the significant progress LGBT communities have already made, transgender rights activists are working hard to ensure the next step is even stronger. The Trans Women of Color Pride Leadership Forum (TMPCFL) held in May 2015, for example, was the first time there was an entire conference dedicated exclusively to transgender people. Additionally, over the last year the National Center for Transgender Equality awarded grants to 21 trans organizations that focused on developing and expanding their services for trans women and the children of transgender parents. Additionally, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (NGTLF) has organized a number of events highlighting the important work of LGBT youth. And a number of organizations – many in the LGBT community – are working hard every day to implement transgender-related legislation, such as the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which will be passed in the U.S. Congress this year.
The NCTE will continue to support this work at NCTE’s next Transgender Year of Action (TWOA) later this year
