Because we use a lot of elbow grease, so that’s what I’d like to know the answer to.
You can see in the video (watch on Youtube here) that his arm stays right there and that it’s pretty easy to keep his arm straight and down when a catcher comes and calls the ball out. But it wouldn’t be hard for him to get a lot of arm motion going so he won’t feel he’s getting tired; and I’d imagine he’d really appreciate if you guys could help him out in that area.
Here are his arm motions at the release of all the pitches that he’s seen:
He’s not trying to be lazy, obviously, but he definitely wants to remain fairly straight. If you can, make it your business to encourage him to be as straight as possible from the start.
I’ve tried to do the same thing for each of the other pitchers in this study. Here’s Matt Wieters (1B):
And here’s Zack Greinke (P):
And here’s Michael Brantley (LHP):
So far, I’ve gotten a lot of excellent feedback from both of those guys. If you have a free moment (or a lot of time to devote to this) and can do either. Just don’t be a jerk and ask questions like these. It won’t help. You’re just gonna wind up wasting a lot of time and making you look like some kind of jerk.
I’m also a huge fan of the “pull the ball” technique; I even posted some video of myself demonstrating it on Reddit a couple of days ago, to some decent results. Just take it as a cue to be super careful how you perform it.
Anyway, I’ll put in some more detail about that in my next post!
As I had previously written about, we’ve been building a system to track and manage our public tweets. This new system will track what users post in your account, what time they post it, and how many followers you have.
It will also allow us to automatically pull the best content from other users so we won’t have to rely that much on our own. We’ve got a couple of exciting things planned for this system coming up later this year.
Here’s what’s coming up:
More social mentions with more granular controls
