This figure represents a slight decrease from the 17 million who were employed as such between 1999 and 2003, while the U.S. Department of Commerce in 2003 reported a total of 21.8 million active workers, with 2 million in the private sector and 12.8 million employed in the public sector.
The Census Bureau (2002) found that between 2000 and 2003, the number of employed photographers in the United States decreased by about 1.6 million, from 14.5 million to 13.1 million. This report was published in September 2002 in conjunction with the report, “Preliminary 2012 Current Population Reports,” and is based on the estimated number of U.S. residents who reported that they were employed in either full-time or part-time jobs, with the number of part-time employees included. The report also shows the number of paid, long-term part-time part-time employees as well as the number of short-term and long-term unemployment benefits claimants.
