If you’re an idealistic, idealistic idealist, photography is probably what you want to get into. Whether you’re a budding photographer or an experienced one, there are tons of jobs available. If you happen to be an entrepreneur, there’s still a lot of opportunity. And if you’re someone with a hobby in addition to a full-time job, even better.
But in our country, we’ve gotten really good at making us think that all young people want to learn how to shoot in the hopes of getting a full-time job. The result is many of us are making a huge mistake and not recognizing the many careers available to photographers. They include writing, modeling, marketing, marketing photography, and publishing. The latter two are definitely not easy jobs, and for some people, they will never turn into full-time jobs. But, there are many people in the industry who can still get them.
So how can we improve our attitudes and learn to look at our job as a career instead of having it simply a hobby?
Here’s what you need to know, and I’ll go into more detail in my second video.
The First Hour
When you get your first gig, don’t believe all of the BS you’re hearing. You aren’t guaranteed work—though that’s not stopping many from advertising you that you’ll never have to work again. Here’s how to assess when you’ve had a successful day.
You just shot a photo and it has spread like wildfire. You had a successful day and just got lucky. You’ve earned a $300+ tip. You may have spent 5 hours doing your homework before coming into work, but you didn’t go home and watch your Netflix. It wasn’t stressful and the results were well worth it.
You’ll never know for sure (unless you get a job offer), but the reality is that you did something that you thought wasn’t achievable (like learning how to do something with a camera or how to improve your technique). Don’t take my word for it: check out this article from Tim O’Brien to learn more. I’ll do my best to highlight the great work that has been done since I wrote it.
Doing what you’ve always wanted to do, without any limitations, no matter how hard the road may be, is really good.
