I think my answer is still ‘one college, one college.’ I’ve been on the road traveling to more than 20 colleges and I found that there were different schools that were specifically suited to photography. If I could only go one way, I’d go to an art school. Art doesn’t just have to be for art’s sake, it can be fun.
If your school doesn’t have a college of photography I’d strongly recommend visiting a photography school and meeting with faculty and students. Take a course that gets you out of the dorms and gives you a way to be more self-motivated for the next year.
What do you like the most about photography schools?
I like the fact that I’m not alone when it comes to trying to get a career as a photographer. The photography school I’m at is full of students who are trying to make a name for themselves, and are trying to learn and grow as photographers. I love the fact that I can help them with that journey.
What is the best way to become a freelance photographer/videographer/douchebag?
For me there are a few factors. I’ve never really tried to get rich; I want to be a photographer so I can learn so I can get better. The second thing I always want to stress is how much I value being connected to the community. All of the photographers I know are very generous in their time and enthusiasm. They all have something that helps them get through the work day.
That means taking class at a conference or an exhibition in their town as a way to connect to the community, and I think that comes through in the videos and photos! What I don’t like is trying to build a following online to make a living. Being a part of a small community like a photo club or group is great if it leads to more content but I don’t want that in my life. I’ve noticed that most professionals are just getting started so I wouldn’t be shocked to see them working in more of a volunteer capacity.
What is your favorite camera (other than a professional DSLR)?
I love the Canon 5D Mark II as a travel-ready camera with great optical controls. The Nikon D800 isn’t really my cup of tea but it’s so versatile that I’ll always have it with me on vacation.
