One of the most common questions of debate is which type of pole makes the best antenna! It all depends on your budget, your antenna needs, and you. I hope this article will help shed light on a few of the factors that might come into play with antenna choices. For example an Antenna Size (the square in the image) is often taken as an automatic answer when choosing the next pole, but there’s more to it than that. The biggest problem with using an Antenna Size is that it doesn’t take into account the shape and shape of the pole you’re trying to build. It is possible to get a pole that could achieve a better response than the one shown here, just like you can build a smaller pole with a longer body to get a lower response (but you might find it doesn’t have the same sensitivity).
In the image below you can see how I got the diameter of my pole to work for me, then adjusted the rest of the size to better reflect the shape of the antenna I wanted to use, in this case a 6 meter dipole with a diameter of 1.875 feet or so. As you can see from the image, I got a pole that was a few inches wider than I wanted, and was almost three inches shorter than I required.
A 1-1/8 inch or 1/2 inch diameter is a great size for a pole, and it’s the first time I’ve seen that size on a dipole. It definitely is not the biggest diameter dipole you can get, but it’s still a great size for dipole antennas. If you would rather make a pole that is only 1/8th inch in diameter, this is the pole size you can get.
A 1/2 inch or 4 inch diameter or smaller pole is another good size. You can use this pole for a dipole or even with a dipole for a radio or TV station. The one to use is also the one you’ll need to mount on your roof or building and that will depend on your needs. If you want to build a roof pole, make sure you buy a pole that is only 1/8th inch or less as you’ll soon run out of room from that small pole. And don’t forget, it’s not only about size.
