Waltz is used in music and dance as a way of setting up the right vibe at a show. We’re not always able to get the right sound for all of the shows.
When you get an orchestra in your orchestra, they’re not all able to all do the same thing. That’s why different orchestras have different arrangements. It’s one of those things where I think that in our situation, we actually have enough musicians that we have the ability to take a shot at it.
This is your first-ever tour. You’ve been doing this for decades. How much have you changed over the years?
It’s hard to say how much I’ve changed, because it changes so much over the course of 30 years. The same band that’s going on tour with me is going on with me 30 years after we did my first concert. So I have to ask, “When I started touring in ’93 with two different orchestras, were there any changes that I made? Or are they still going on?” And what I say to everybody is that you have to be flexible. If I were here now, I would not have a cello in my band because I would have to get someone in that cello right off the bat.
As you’ve gotten older, how do you feel about touring the same place that you played in your 20s?
That sounds really good. People want to hear it on television. You can’t fake that. You’re getting out of this for good. Sometimes in a big city you just get a little tired of being the guy who does it. If I was 30 years younger, and I was thinking, “Hey, what’s the best thing in your life?” I would have been all over it.
