Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has taken over as commander in chief of the armed forces, state news agency MENA says.

He took over from his mentor, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who was appointed by President Mohamed Morsi on 14 July.

Mr Sisi, 67, is expected to work closely with Egypt’s military on plans for the country’s future.
