How long do you have to complete your woodworking course to receive your diploma?
“One year,” says Siegel of the course. “It can be less, it can be more.” For some, it’s a year or two, and they may be able to take a second or third woodworking job.
“The only thing that can be said about that is that it can vary,” she says. “For some people, it takes two or three years, for some it may take five or six years.”
Siegel acknowledges the variability, but adds that there are a number of woodworking programs with excellent credentials that are geared specifically for individuals at least 10 years old and capable of working with wood.
In the United States, according to the Woodshop Initiative, many preschoolers are taught to make a variety of woodworking equipment on the job. This includes a simple sanding block that a child can use to cut wood, a bench or table scraper that helps kids keep their hands clean, but also a table saw.
At the National Woodcrafting Association, we offer four different programs and courses for woodworking adults. We offer six to 10 years of woodworking experience with one of the Woodshop Program courses, one of the Master of Science in Woodworking instruction programs, or with the Master in Forestry course, according to Siegel.
“We have a huge number of people who have been working in the woodworking business their whole lives and have just picked it up. They’re just a little bit rusty,” says Siegel. “The program is geared for those people.”
Siegel says that if you’re looking for the right kind of education for your career, you may want to take a look at three different woodworking programs.
It’s important, from the start of a woodworking program course to after your graduation to make sure you fully understand the material you’re learning and how best to use the skills you’ve acquired. This can be time-consuming, so you may want to consider other options including apprenticeships as well.
It’s also important to know that you need to be able to work with a variety of types of wood to get the most out of your woodworking course.
Siegel says a basic rule of thumb is that you want to learn from wood that looks “like” wood. There’s nothing wrong with learning from wood you can find in the garage; there’s nothing wrong with trying to work with wood you
