It is. It is like any other kind of craft with plenty of tools, time, attention, and practice. It’s not glamorous, but it is important stuff. I’m an adult, and the last thing I want to do is waste valuable time trying to teach someone something that doesn’t work.
A lot of what I share in this post is geared towards the beginning woodworker who is a bit confused and wanting to brush up on their woodworking skills. If you have no idea how to do a certain tool, or can’t find that particular handle in the correct shape, that’s totally understandable. However, there is a better than even chance that if you learn this stuff and get good at these simple things, and then get to work with real wood, you get something to show that you’ve mastered a key concept and that’s what really matters.
I feel like the only way to truly learn is to work with real wood for awhile. This is your chance to go out into the woods and really get to know a different kind of wood, in and out of shape, over the course of a long working day or two. And after having done a bit of that over the course of the last few years, my skills have grown so much that I’ve had more success now making and working with a variety of different different shapes and sizes.
