With a budget of less than $5000, a decent shop (see my workshop checklist) that you can turn into your woodworking studio. I started with an easy project – a simple bench for my workshop, then I built myself a bench and a workbench. My first bench and workbench was really inexpensive, too. That has not changed. My second bench and workbench (I bought a larger one that was about the same size as the first one I built) cost about $10,000. It was a lot of work, but it was the start of a dream.
What is your greatest difficulty in woodworking?
The most difficult part of woodworking for me are benching pieces that are too big. You need a lot of tools to hold the pieces right up. If one piece is about 4 inches wide, that means you have to hold it right up. I could make two benches that are the same size and have the same tooling in them. That would be a great deal, but in the end it doesn’t matter if it was the same height as my other bench. I don’t always get what I want because there are too many things you have to take care of to ensure that the workpiece is set right. You need to set the bench down in a specific position and you may want to raise or lower it. I have a very large hand saw, and every time I turn a bench I feel that I am setting things up. I think my favorite part of the business is that while I am setting up something, the tools are all right where they should be to handle the job.
What is the best piece of advice you ever received?
I would say that you have to get a shop in order to get good at woodworking. In addition to having good tools, you also need your own studio. It is not that you can build things cheaply, it is that you need to make a decent living making work. You need people who are interested in working with you, and you need to be able to make that happen. If you have good tools, good customers – that is the icing on the cake for a successful shop venture and the biggest advantage in the market. I don’t know what else can be said.
Do you have any special advice for aspiring woodworkers out there?
Get your hands dirty. You will do lots of things wrong if you are not doing some real woodworking. I think that every true woodworker
